Hackney cab drivers in Bristol who took part in a strike over new regulations introduced by Bristol City Council said their action sent a "clear message".
Shafiq Ahmed said nine out of 10 drivers supported the action between midnight Saturday and 0600 BST Sunday.
He said: "We as a trade are united and totally opposed to the way the council is wishing to impose the new policies."
Hackney cab divers are protesting at new regulations which include respraying "black cab" vehicles blue.
Kate Hartas, spokeswoman for the council, said extra night buses were laid on and city centre taxi marshals assisted revellers getting cabs that were available.
The council said its plans would make using taxis safer, and it hoped to resolve issues over the blue livery in the next few weeks.
