Hello everyone, new member but have been reading the site a lot.

I am currently going through the intense licencing for being a taxi driver in the north east  here in Redcar and Cleveland.

i started this change in my life on january 3rd by calling the local j&p taxis to speak to craig the owner who told me how to go about getting the licence, quite a lot later i had done some internet research and while waiting to recieve my taxi drivers pack from the Redcar & Cleveland Borough council i did some more,

i recieved my licencing pack a couple of days later and then had to arrange my DSA taxi drivers test, obviously this test date takes time to come about and finally i had the date of friday the 8th february, which i past with flying colours of course,

then of course the medical which i had previously booked for 12th so that it followed on as closely as possible to my driving test as you only get a 28 day turn around with both to get all the details to the council, i was truly expecting a much harder medical than it was, i was expecting blood samples and other things and all it was, was a couple of coughs here and there and a quick eye test. and of course even though i did not have much control over it, i past with flying colours as well.

wich leads to today, getting to the licencing office is not the easiest of thing up here as its in the middle of no where, but to make sure that i have everything i need i gave them a quick call to double check everything.

it all seemed well and i set off on a 45 minute bus journey and a 20 minute walk, lost of course, and i finally get there to realise that i have brought everything with me BUT,

i forgot to get the disclosure signed by a solicitor, so i have to come back home and arrange an appointment with a solicitor to get the disclosure form signed,

i will get this signed tomorrow for £5 wich i was expecting to be much more expensive than that, and then i can go and get the process on the way,

still to get done, i will cough up more money to the council to get the CRB done, dependant on how long that takes to do, averaging around 4 weeks currently, i will then go and do the area knowledge test and then as long as i pass it all i will get my badge 5 days later.

so far this has cost me:

DSA driving test £60
Driving lessons £96
Medical £70
CRB £36
Council Fees £55

i am so looking forward to starting work so that i can not only recoope the money spent but also to start my new career.

Uniting the trade in the interests of the drivers!

The above post is their response to the hand of freindship offered by the union to the fleet operators and bosses organisation

The licensing authorities insurers et al won't be the only ones looking to chisel a living out of you in this game mate

I just started driving in South West too - didn't have to do a DSA test (what's that?). Had to do medical and CRB check and that was it. I've done a few weekends so far - use the company's car and take 35% of earnings (pay own tax). Not a great earner but I'm actually enjoying it... doh!

Biggsy,

Best of luck, hope its works out for you, I would suggest you keep on doing what your doing for a while, I'v always believed in the try before you buy motto, it don't suit everyone.

If you want to know more about the DSA Taxi test follow this link: http://www.dsa.gov.uk/Taxis.asp
