Newcastle Airport
Private cars and most taxis are banned from the terminal

Taxi drivers in the region are holding a protest at Newcastle Airport on Friday.

Private and hackney cab drivers from Newcastle, Gateshead, and North Tyneside are joining forces to demonstrate against the new pick up and drop off points at the airport.

They are angry about changes to the picking up and dropping off arrangements there.

The protest will involve them driving around the airport in a circular route from 1300 BST on Friday.

Designated area

Airport officials have said the move was prompted by security and safety concerns.

The changes were introduced earlier in 2003 and mean only licensed taxis are able to park directly outside the terminal.

Other operators have to drop off or collect passengers in a new designated area 20 yards from the main entrance, with a 15 minute waiting time limit.

Cab drivers say it is an inconvenience and represents a danger for passengers, particularly those who are disabled.

What was the outcome of the above story ?
Does anyone know the Airports decisions ?

Because it is still a pain in the ass you get 10 mins free and then you have to leave the groungs and re-entre.
Meaning you wait for 7 mins and get out before you get charged.
Flaming stupid to have to rush around like an idiot or you will be charged.
Like it says in the above story "it is an inconvenience and represents a danger for passengers, particularly those who are disabled."

Terry, Terry ,Terry
"Easily sorted given ORGANISATION !!!!!!"
--------------------------------------------------------------

I take it you mean if Drivers joined the GMB that the GMB would EASILY resolve this problem ?

OK, I will give the GMB a task and also put the GMB to trial.

Resolve this problem within 28 days and have all taxi's made exempt from any charges in Newcastle Airport whilst they are working Picking up or dropping off ( Not at the terminals where Airport Taxis rank up.)
( Just at the pick up and drop off point  / the shelters )
So if there is a delay with the flight or baggage we can await our passengers without having to pay a dime or park on a busy duel carriageway whilst waiting !!!!

Do that and I will join the GMB ....IS THAT A DEAL ?

Hellow Mick.
That story was from donkeys ago mate.
I was just wondering if there was talks of getting the silly forking 10 min payment thing
removed for taxis.
I mean we are not parked there because we want to sit there.
We are actually providing a service for airport passengers.

Regards Steve

I even tried to contact the Airport direct a while ago asking if there was any exemptions for taxi drivers dropping off or picking up, explaining the it is an inconvenience and the danger it poses for passengers.
I also asked if I could meet an official to discuss the matter at there convenience.

Surprise !!!! I never got a reply..

The dangers of illegal pick ups at the airport were considered to outway the inconvenience of legitimate taxi services picking up at the Airport.

My trick has always been to wait in the lay-by on the Airport road and tell my passengers to ring me when they are in the terminal building with their cases ................... I then drive up to the Airport and pick them up without having to exceed the 10 mins free period.

Delayed arrivals are posted on the airports website, another trick is, check the arrival time when you know the plane is in the air, so if a plane is coming in from Turkey I check the website 2 hours before the flight is due, as flights generally make up time when in the air.

I know the situation is a disgrace mate .............. and I disagree with it wholeheartedly ................. but they have to consider many more eventualities than a passenger getting to his pre-booked taxi, and if you are going to discuss the situation with them you should take their responsibilities into consideration when formulating your argument.

Totally the wrong approach Taxi's and it is called setting a false precedent. It isn't, never has been and never will be the case that people from the union go in wave a magic wand and things are all better, well certainly not if the employers have never had to deal with an organised workforce

It is about organising and building an effective campaign like the one we were involved with in London about picking up and dropping off in red routes. It is a question of forming broad alliances with interested parties, i.e. user groups. In the case down here blind and disabled people who suffer just because they used private hire and their pick up or destination was on a red route would mean they either have to walk coming to or going from their journey. Many blind and disabled people helped the D2D campaign that was an amalgam of the scrupulous proprietors (and they do exist), the GMB Professional drivers branch and other forward looking sections of the trade who campaigned for private hire access to red routes for piccking up and dropping off.

You meet work out your campaign strategies, where you can get political support from; there is leafleting, and public meetings, lobbying of MP's and councillors. It was bloody difficult but after a years battling with those who were moving heaven and earth we won.

I don't know the set up or the issue properly in your neck of the woods but I wouldn't mind betting that even if you were properly organised into the union and you had competent officers and stewards working with other decent elements in the industry up there you would still have a battle and a half on your hands to get the right to wait at the airport.

In the union with a bit of sacrifice and determination, linking up with other decent types associated with the industry you might have a chance after a battle. But if your not in the union in the first place then there is little to no chance of anything effective being organised.

Only after a battle like that is won can a union rep sometimes go in with a magic wand and get a result and the only reason for that is that you have shown that the North East drivers branch (which you could have at some stage) isn't to be messed about with.

And before brother pollard asks, no I am not having a go at you or him or Geordies in general it's just my humble view on how it is and the sort of things that will have to be done before we can win the respect from fleet operators, licensing authorities and airport and other authorities, that drivers deserve

FFS just goes to show the union mentality MAGIC WAND ffs Izzy wizzy lets get busy were these the words of a puppet imo yes.

So i would suspect the union decline your offer taxis because they may have used all there magic dust .

However taxis as a point of safety with respect to an attempt by extremists with suicidal intendants imo that may be the reason for the airport governors to take there stance on the parking issues they have implemented.Or it could also be an exercise to obtain more revenue from visitors picking up loved ones.Only thing is money breeds greed and safety can contradict the issue.Once new a union man that banged on about safety but it would cost you btw.Never the less i suppose the advise from bandit would be my approach on this occasion he seems down to earth and constructive with his criticism.

Good luck

Charlie the paper lad

Terry I know man...I was actually pulling your leg saying resolve the matter within 28 days and I would join GMB,
I wont unite and fight yet mate.
I need to use my options and money carefully to become part of the correct union or association what ever it will be.
I will be honest I do not know loads about the Unions or associations and what benefits they will offer me.
But Carrot Cruncher ? and Tad Thick ? come on mate.
I think I am rather wise not to join until I know whats best for me. You said in another post "How will you learn and see how the unions work" if you do not attend and join ! ( Or it went something like that )........
Well I do honestly ask you know...I listen to real life scenarios from members experiences that have had good and bad results directly or indirectly .
Moving off taxi talk 1 moment......
I am not been a shit head but my wife works for a Local school employed by GMBC and is a GMB member...she is getting the rough deal treatment at work ( cutting hours , pay and retention pay ) the unions GMB and unisen have done bollocks to assist a true unfair situation. I have told my wife to cancel all subscriptions to both unions with immediate effect. ( In-fact I will cancel the DD now on her behalf ).
I AM NOT HAVING A DIG and I know its not you lads but the reps around here stand for you all and they preform a bit poor to say the least.

I will try and do my homework and decide mate...but for now I must stay open minded and keep crunchin carrots..

Steve

Steve the wind from me was if we can get red routes and con zone down here! why couldnt a bit of negotiating have achieved a fairer result at the Airport, There is no way the Airport authorities would have ignored a letter from us the GMB. your reluctance to wheel out the Artillery [ie us] left you with the result you have achieved, being ignored and shat on. Think about it!!

As for your wifes issue i am of course very interested, but remember the Union is the membership, that said i will PM you a phone number ring this guy teell him that I advised you to contact him and find out what the real story is and plug me in to his response. DO NOT CANCEL her cons could prove extremely expensive in the long run. Tell her to stay in and fight for her rights within the Union, remember nothing is ever achieved from walking away. She has every right to what she has paid for quality representation, and I have an interest in ensuring SHE gets it.

Glad to see the Arsenal have been given a walk over in the FA Cup I expect we will play our reserves again against Newcastle as we did in the Carling Cup, they really are asoft touch these days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello Terry.
I can see where you are coming from..Point taken
As far as my wifes issue I will ring your mate when I get the PM as all the girls would like a meeting with a DECENT rep and begin some course of action ( They all hope that there points are taken serious this time ) because before all they were told was the council can give 12 weeks prior notice to employees and then they can alter any contract....So the rep says !!! I will explain in full to the rep with a brain.
As for her contributions that was lucky she has not got them coming out of my bank so I could not of stopped the DD, or I would of. They are taken from an account where we need to go into the bank ( No online facility )....so not canceled yet...I will speak to your man and decide if it is worth her staying with GMB or not.....

But Terry thank you for your concern WE really appreciate it.

And on the subject of the Football....well Newcastle is a standing joke at the moment mate...totally crap..
I am however as interested in football as I am in knowing how pubic hair grows out of your eyebrows....( None what so ever )...

Steve
