Hi,

This my first post as a prospective driver! Over the past few weeks I have been researching joining the trade (I've had just about enough of my constrictive job and desire the flexibility that being self employed can have doing something I love)

I've been crunching numbers and just can't seem to work out if the following is realistic?

In order to achieve a liveable earning and pay for all associated costs my private hire cab will need to turnover £45000 per year?!? This would break down...

£45000 GROSS EARNINGS PER ANNUM

-£5200 TO BE ON THE FIRMS BOOKS

-£10400 DIESEL/MAINTAINANCE COSTS

-£7000 INSURANCE

-£2040 CAR FINANCE

LEAVING ME AN ANNUAL EARNING OF AROUND £20500 (BEFORE TAX!)...

First of all, is £45000 achievable as a minicab driver working 60 hours per week in Milton Keynes? I've worked this down to taking £15 per hour in fares!

Secondly does anybody have any idea of a good (cheap) insurer who is going to insure a 21 yr old with a brand new badge, two claims but no convictions for less than £7000!

I've got a funny feeling that its not going to work out, can anyone offer any help or advice?

Matt

Hi mate,

I am in a similar position, well i have now got my pco licence for the london area, However i am slightly older 23 and have luckily found 2 years ncb on my previous car which has helped alot. I am only doing cabbing part time, but the dont mean nothing to the insurance company lol the best price i got is £1556 however its only third party but full comp was 3k and i think the montly payments would be too much. I dont have no convictions or claims.

I spoke to a number is insurers and they all say their is only 1 or 2 companies that insure new badge holders, 1 i think is royal sun allience not sure about the others.

The best quote system on the net is http://www.jmi.co.uk/ its instant and its how i have brought it throu. Give them a try but i dont think it will be less than 5k ?? let me know the outcome

P.S from what i can tell its the NCB discount that helps alot even if its just 1 year it halved my quote. Also get married that would have saved me another £200 lol

Try Tradex - I've been driving Hackney for over 10 years but they were still £2k cheaper on renewal
