Hi again

As I said on my last post, I am thinking of buying a hackney license. The district I live in has about 130,000 residents and a university, I'm in the north west of England there are about 115 hackneys i belive. Can someone give me some advice as to potential earnings, I am getting mixed messages depending on who I talk to. A few people have said you can take £200 on a Friday and on a Saturday Night and I have been told £1000 a week is achievable if you work full time and at the right time of day. Does this seem correct or too much as other people say you can't earn that much if you work 20 hours a day 7 days a week!?

Your help is appreciated!

I wish I could make money like that.
Those days are long gone matey.
20 hours a day 7 days a week. That’s about the size of things matey if you want to take money like that, worse still you will have to join the Private Hire squad if you want constant bookings.
I have days where I work full shifts and take about £30 other days I might take £60 ish.
The whole job has gone crap and about to get worse with the likes of the gmb speaking on my behalf when i want no part of the crap they speak.
i will give you a tip buddy, stack asda's shelves and earn more money per hour. Oh that’s if the gmb has not destroyed asda as well because they had to involve themselves in that kafuffle as well.

To make a £1,000 a week you need to be a mini cab driver in London or Brighton and Hove

Cheers for the replies. A lot of the hackneys and private hires in my area are driving brand new 08 plate £20-30,000 taxi's, how can they afford/justify buying brand new taxi's if you don't make good money? Also I have heard that I'd be able to get £150-£200 a week renting the taxi to someone when I'm not using it. Does this sound correct?

As for private hire, I think I'd be looking at paying the private hire company about £100 a week for the radio, does this sound about right, do you pay them anything else on top of this eg a share of the takings. And if I were to go with a private hire company, would I be able to put in for school runs and do airport runs on my own?

Cheers again.

Its called been up to the eyes in debt ....
For some strange reason some people seem to love getting stuff on the never never.

What ever you do....You are self employed.
And unless the office/PH operator pays your tax and NI, they technically are working for you.
They are taking telephone calls on your behalf.

Someone said in this post that they can not make big money like you mention and I agree with them.
Once upon a time you could, you might well still make money like you mention of in London or Brighton and Hove like Nick says.

Regards Steve

IMO  £500+ per week should be attainable where ever you work if that is the sort of money you want to take, but it will involve a couple of heavy shifts at the weekend.

Be aware that taking £500 is not the same as earning £500 especially after you have declared it to the tax man

Why don't you get a proper job???

I used a simple rule that 50% of my take goes out of sight & the rest is wages, after tax but now the fuel is so costly I think it's probably nearer 40%.

If your prepared to work long hours & stick out the 'kipper' times then there is a living to be had but be warned, there are easier jobs out there that pay a lot more.

Yes, after tax I think your fingers are about right Supercabby.

Got to say that not everyone is cut out for this job, but if you are you will love it, best move I ever made!
