Councillors approve plans to increase the maximum fee charged by taxi drivers
TAXI fares are set to rise after councillors approved increases to maximum tariffs charged by cabbies.
Local taxi drivers’ trade association asked West Berkshire Council’s licensing committee to raise maximum fares by around 2.5 per cent from last year.
West Berkshire Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Operators Association vice-chairman Rodney Nemeth said the average journey would cost just ten pence more.
Whereas two pounds currently pays for the first 490 metres of a journey, from April 1 it is set to pay for the first 478 metres.
Every 86 metres on top of this will now cost ten pence, instead of 88 metres as at present.
Councillors backed the increases, with the exception of Newbury mayor Adrian Edwards (Con, Falkland) who said the distances should be recorded in miles rather than metres.
The public are now able to have their say on the price rises before they are adopted.
