The situation in Gateshead is that a temorary suspension of HC plates was implimented in September (sorry can't remember) I think.

That suspension was initially implimented on the basis that the conditions and by-laws were in need of urgent review.

The 36 policy changes are to be placed before Council within the next 3-4 weeks, therefore discussion must take place about the temporary restriction.

This will start with a meeting of Gateshead "Taxi Working Party" to be held next week, where all sides of the trade will have the opportunity to voice their opinions and concerns about ALL the changes.

The decision has not yet been made ................... however the trade in Gateshead will surely be able to convince the council to survey unmet demand.

People are making mountains out of molehills ................... the remidies are simple and effective ............... insist the public is put first.

Still no phone calls ............................ suprising or not ................... some people just don't want to hear the truth?

Please refer to the Crawley Licensed Cab Drivers Association thread in the general taxi chat forum for a few more details, however:-

Mole Valley have verbally advised me on the phone that as of now they will no longer licence Private Hire Operators which are not based within their administrative area.

The Association has put considerable pressure on Mole Valley as have local councils including Crawley and Reigate & Banstead. At last we have a sensible resolution.

I do not know what is going to happen to the several operators in areas around Mole Valley which have currently got PH Operators Licences or the drivers they use with Mole Valley PH Licences. There could be an awful lot of drivers looking for work in Dorking. Though maybe they'll give them time to make other arrangements.

Don't let the b******s grind you down!

If anyone is interested , we've had a response from the DfT about their view of the law on cross border licensing. It was signed Pippa Brown and while she says DfT do not give legal advise and it's up to Local Authorities to come to own conclusion she did confirm DfT's view:-
Dft believe the law as stated in "Ditta & Choudrhy v Birmingham CC󞩹] is still good law and that a PHV Operator needs a license from the area in which he intends to operate and may only use vehicles and drivers licensed by that same area.

Thank you Department for Transport, now any other local authorities who still don't understand?

Our efforts to fight this , effectively dissuaded any of the established companies from extending or starting to take Mole valley drivers in Crawley. I believe that the Licensing officers currently in place in MV who had inherited this setup may also have been able to use our opposition as ammo in their internal discussions with their own legal team who had approved the previous system. We also kept our own MP and Council informed of our actions.

I understand MV are now introducing both knowledge and DSA Taxi Drivers tests so there will be little incentive for anyone to take the MV route in future
