Mr Terrance Flanagan, if you want to take the GMBPDB into a campaign that will gain support from the trade then I suggest you call for taxis and private hire vehicles to be able to use "red" diesel. I would back this up by adding some proviso's Mr Flanagan, of which proving a constant involvement in the carriage of passengers for hire and reward as the users sole sourse of income be only one.

I'm sorry that you have chosen to attempt to take a pop ....................... don't understand why, but I'm sure you see some benefit in it.

FFS sake Mick your post was unclear to me as to its meaning, no pop intended just having a laugh. If the membership want to campaign for RED diesel of course we will do it, given sensible limitations as you have started to outline! The major problem down here would be availability! Note still no response on the proposed 1hr strike, i have yet to express a view on it, awaiting those at the sharp end to respond. Whats your view Mick??????????????????

DECISIONS ARE TAKEN BY THE MEMBERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wouldn't agree with it Tel for the reasons outlined previously, not to mention it will be a flop. However unlike the two bob scabby bar - stewards who only have three things in life that really matter to them i.e. me myself and I, under no circumstances would any decent trade unionist scab on it.

More importantly a few of the more sensible on the site seem to have developed the ideas around red diesel. The question of bio fuels was also raised.

Well if our New Labour Government was serious there is a link there and improving the cost effectiveness of one part of the public transport system while at the same time promoting ecologically friendly fuels could be a winner. I would suggest that if the government could legislate for bio fuels to be promoted generally but specifically to us as red fuel that we could get cheaper.

That would raise the question of ownership of the industry once again.

This sort of thing should be discussed in depth at branch level with resolutions being drawn up and put to the union as a whole. Once we have a clear position we can start pushing for it at every level in the Labour Party.

Thought out interventions like this will take time and Labour Party membership is a pre requisite to participating in Labour Party decision making bodies.

We are at a primitive stage of still having to argue to get people to raise their level of understanding and to find the guts to JOIN THE UNION in this industry so there is a long way to go and we are all paying the price of yesterday's sloth, apathy and fear.

However now that there are people in membership and the minority active in many parts of the country I see no reason that serious work shouldn't start on this soon.

Brother Pollard your help and input will be needed

We need to get away from the idea of strike or demonstration at this stage.

We need to start our own fight, with our own terms and objectives.

We need to offer reasoned arguments for the proposals we make and gain support through other enviromental and consumer groups to gather public support.

If we said that allowing the use of "red" diesel would see prices of taxis stay the same for at least the next 5 years would we get support from the trade as it would be a big pull in gaining public support.

If we said that assistance in getting all taxis using Bio-diesel would decrease our carbon footprint, and if prices were again discounted and a fare freeze implimented we would again gather massive "outside" support.

I believe that looking for a real beneficial solution has far more chance of success than trying to join in a fight which is highly unlikely to be successful.

But thats just my opinion.

My help and input are always available .......... however consideration to paying my bills remains paramount.

2 years ago had talks with TFL about bio-diesel, it was difficult then! but now with introduction of the Emission Zone in London, and having a SOCIALIST Mayor i see an oppurtunity!

As for the strike i note that omly 2 drivers seem to have an opinion, pathectic!!!!!!!!!!!

mick understand that paying bills comes first, hopefully in a Unionised Industry it will get easier!

Bio Diesel with reduced rates for those providing a public service like us with the socialist mayor showing the way. Perhaps if we could start a debate around a resolution that we could put to our January branch meeting could kick the discussion off. Give it a couple of days for a bit more thought and discussion and I will try a get a draft resolution up on the branch website. If we could get it knocked about and then through for Congress by June in Plymouth we could have a major debate and a worked out policy to put to the Labour Party that we can back up with solid argumentation.

Mick I fully agree with what you say about paying the bills first. Have ended up in deep shiiite myself before letting that side of things slip.

The trick seems to be to only take on what is manageable at any given time and that means prioritising. More importantly team building so as we can all help out.

This one has great potential all round and there will be a benefit for all if we can do it right

I think the proposal should be made to provide a discounted "green" fuel facility with conversion costs granted by government to include Bio-diesel and LPG.

In the mean time, the use of fuel with reduced fuel duty (ie red diesel) or a facility to rebate fuel duty on a monthly basis (poss through the post office) could well be a start.

We need to remember gentlemen ............... that higher prices at the pumps for fuel could well lead to more people seeking alternatives to car ownership ....................... and who's the only transport provider that offers a door to door service.

If this is achieved then we'll all be calling for fuel to be £1.50 a litre.

will a strike by the tanker drivers at shell cause enough of a problem.

its not to do with the price at the forecourt but their wages dispute.

but why not make the most of this disruption and do more to cause problems elsewhere
