Just joined and looking for some good advice

I'm 19 (20 next week) and am very very keen to become a Private Hire Owner/Driver. I've got a 2004 Vauxhall Vectra and been told by my local licensing authority that I am eligible to apply for a licence and plate for the car but i can't find any companies that will insure drivers under the age of 21!!!!!

I found one who quoted me £8100............ The cars' only worth £7k!!

Can anyone help me out or do i have to wait another year??

I'm from Larkhall which is 20 miles from Glasgow and my licensing authority is South Lanarkshire Council.

I searched Google for insurers and all but 1 wouldn't give me a quote because of my age.

J & M Insurance quoted me just over £8000.

Thanks for that! I haven't actually applied for a licence yet so it's a bit hard filling forms in when they ask for the name/number of the firm you work for.....

I'm enquiring about the insurance etc before i actually apply as it's a lot of money to pay out when there is no guarantee i will actually get insured

Hi T4M_VX,

Hope your well, I'm not sure up your part of the woods, but down here in England you have to be 21 to apply for a Taxi/PH licence. Is it 20 in Scotland.

There's no minimum age for applicants but you must have been driving for at least a year. Seems to be that you must be 21 or over to get insured though, which is quite disappointing

Have you considered driving for someone, usually the premium won't increase for the proprietor, but the excess would be high.

you can ring the insurance factory on 08700 272 229 and ask for Lawrence or Richard Fullerton and say Tony of Taxi-Today magazine gave you their details and you've been on the forum and read Sams post on there.

you'll be surprised...... they'll look after you

or try The Taxi centre insurance in Glasgow direct line into their insurance office 0141 847 6969 and it'll be either Julianne or Nicole who answers just say Tony of Taxi-Today said to ring and they'd look after you.

Cheers for that Tony! I'll give them a call tomorrow. I saw on Sam's post that you need to put down a deposit, which by the sounds of it is quite big..... Hopefully if all is well i should get most of my private car premium back

i spoke to lawrence about sam last week to find out what the outcome was and Lawrence said that sam had taken out the policy and that he'd managed to get sam sorted out with a smaller deposit and the rest monthly over i think 10 months.

if Sam reads this could he let us know if thats correct !

Before i go any further i'll need to see about getting on a system. A guy i know has just started up his own business which looks like it's taking off. He has one P/H car and one Taxi and i may ask if he is looking for another P/H car.

I used to work in a taxi office at weekends so i've got a good bit of knowledge

Just out of curiosity, does anyone here run a petrol engined Vectra?

I'm wondering wether they are reliable as taxis as all of the ones in my area are diesels!

I've got a 2004 2.2 Direct with 28k on the clock
