Cabbies' opposition to jobs drive

Demonstrators say the scheme allows unfair preferential treatment
|
Cab drivers have protested against plans to give help to women and ethnic minorities entering the profession.
They said moves to offer language, numeracy and childcare support for those taking the Knowledge exam was preferential treatment.
But supporters of the scheme, supported by the London Development Agency (LDA), said greater diversity was in the long-term interests of the profession.
Members of the London Cab Drivers' Club (LCDC) demonstrated outside the LDA.
The Knowledge, introduced in 1865, involves remembering every street within six miles of Charing Cross and takes up to three years to attain.
'Backward approach'
"Most people have had to do the Knowledge in their own way," said Alan Fleming, from the LCDC.
"A lot of people have actually done it while looking after a family or paying their mortgage. I think it's quite an unfair system that certain parties should be singled out for preferential treatment which is what this is all about."
Mr Fleming also labelled the scheme "patronising" towards the groups it was actually trying to target.
Official figures show that only 5% of London's black cab drivers are from ethnic minority communities, and 1.6% are women.
Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, accused the LCDC of demonstrating a "consistently backward and short-sighted approach" to improving the taxi trade.
"The project simply aims to support people from communities that are under-represented in the industry, as they undertake the arduous Knowledge process, so that over time London will have a taxi trade that looks more like its population," he said.
"This will make London an even more attractive place to companies around the world whose business we wish to attract."
He insisted there would be no compromise over the knowledge qualification process which would remain vigorous.

Lengthy article in Morning Star 13 10 07 by Ken Livingstone condemning this demo as RACIST, Hopper are you suggesting that when Unite the LTDA GMB and The Mayor of London condemn a demo then they are acting like twats??
Racism must be attacked every time its filthy creed emerges. i will leave others to judge whether me exposing a so called leading light in this industries SUPPORT this for RACIST demo is irresponsible or not. I believe i have a duty to expose such behaviour at all times to prevent this racist behaviour dragging the industry into the racist gutter Wayne Casey would appear to be proud to reside in!!!!! I wonder if the NTA would like to comment on this ........................ of theirs??????????

Okay now lets look at this racism...
The cab drivers were protesting because in their view.....

Who qualifies for the scheme?
well it would appear the taxi trade believe "The project simply aims to support people from communities that are under-represented in the industry, as they undertake the arduous Knowledge process, so that over time London will have a taxi trade that looks more like its population,"
So if your from a minority 'under represented' within the London cab trade you can qualify for language, numeracy and childcare support.
If your not under represented you dont qualify.
It seems to me the policy itself is racist.

The policy which is to be put in place in London is obviously partial and selective, its selective racism based upon the colour of a persons skin and the background they come from.

my daughter is at school and when i was a kid we used to call a blackboard exactly that a blackboard
now at my daughters school these boards are white and called white boards, they changed the names of the boards so as not to alienate ethnic minorities of a different coloured skin pigment, ok thats fine but to then call it a white board....... is that not then racist ?
where do you draw the line ?
im sure in lots of modern ways of living you could find racism if you look deep enough
theres an advert on telly about a asian youth who leaves a mobile phone on a table top and it shows a white youth going to pinch it is that not a sort of racism ?
then theres another of a afro carribean couple showing what looks like typical thug who happens to be white, they walk around the outside of their property showing him how easy it is to break in.
are they saying white youths who dress in a certain way are all thieves / burgulars and steal of minorities ?
dont see anyone kicking off or complaining about this on national telly.
my point is, if you go looking for what you / me consider racism you will find it and you dont have to look too far.
all this political correctness instead of ending racism as turned it around and aimed it at the ones who were at one time of being accused as racist, now these same groups of people now are the ones being targetted.
think we've covered the topic of racism to its max so i'd appreciate it if we could move on from it and get back to trade topics etc |

| Having watched this thread unravel,i am of the opinion that the london black cab drivers club is taking a stance which can only be regarded as Racist.the quote in the BBCs article also points towards eliteism and sexist leanings in the london cab trade,any body which condems the practice of minorities trying to improve their position/job by education/ learning purely to maintain the status quo is guilty of racism,and should you support such people then you are a RACIST.I would never accuse KEN of being racist in his personal life nor would i consider his public life as being anything other than to champion the rights of LONDONERS.Remember that outside of the capital the majority of cab/p/h drivers are of non english stock and that they perform a dangerous job very well.The nta spoke out against this demonstration,and should be condemed for doing so ,i offer them the right of reply on this forum.I would have thought that as UNITE,THE GMB,and the LTDA have shown a united front on this issue then the nta offers an apology on behalf of its missguided spokesperson. |

London taxi drivers are disproportionately white and male, the Mayor of London has said.
A scheme was launched this week to encourage more women and people from black, Asian and ethnic minority communities to complete the Knowledge qualification taken by all black cab drivers.
