I am part of a research group at the Institute of Neurology, University
College London. Our primary interest is in trying to understand how our
brain allows us to learn and remember, and how this can break down in
the context of brain injury or illnesses such as Alzheimer’s disease.
Over the last number of years we have been studying licensed London taxi
drivers, and found that acquiring the vast knowledge of London’s streets
resulted in the part of the brain known to be important for memory (the
hippocampus) being bigger in the taxi drivers. This result was reported
in the prestigious scientific journal, Proceedings of the National
Academy of Sciences USA, to wide scientific and public interest. We have
since confirmed this result in a new study that I attach.
We are now extending this study to look at taxi drivers memory in more
detail and need to recruit a large number of taxi drivers. Therefore I
was wondering if it would be possible to put a notice on your web page?
We are looking for green badge drivers, male, between 30 to 50 years old
and healthy. They will need to attend our unit in central London and we
can offer a small amount of £50 to help cover their expenses. *IF
