Health arriving by taxi cab
| |
|
SEFTON Taxi drivers are turning the tables on their customers by giving them a tip or two during Men’s Health Week.
Hackney and some private hire drivers will be handing out a free information booklet to their passengers this week as part of Sefton Primary Care Trust’s work to improve the health of all local men.
Called Sefton Man, the booklet offers simple ways for men to improve their lifestyle to safeguard their future health and wellbeing, including tips on improving diet, increasing physical activity, reducing alcohol and stopping smoking.
Taxi drivers have been working with the PCT for some months now as part of the Colin the Cabbie project.
This latest initiative from Sefton’s men’s health team follows a series of similar successful projects working with bus and truck drivers, who, from research, lead unhealthier lifestyles than men working in other professions.
Jo McCullagh, health promotion specialist, said: “This new booklet is just one part of the work we’re doing in Sefton to help our men lead healthier and longer lives.
“We’ve designed it with input from the men we are particularly targeting to ensure it is going to be useful for them.”
Gareth Lewis, men’s health nurse, added: “It is about promoting the preventative steps that all men can take to help reduce their risk of serious long term illness in a way that it right for them.”
The project also incorporates a number of other elements aimed at improving the lives of the drivers.
Workshops on healthy eating have been organised for them and free leisure passes are encouraging them to get active after spending a shift on the road.
A number of men have also been trained as peer mentors so they can offer lifestyle advice and information to fellow taxi drivers and the public.
Taxi driver Percy Smith said: “Our booklet is excellent.
“It gives a lay persons understanding, keeping it simple to get the message across.
“Instead of asking each other at the ranks if we’ve had a busy day, we’re now talking about quitting smoking.
“It’s been a real eye opener and it’s made me think about my lifestyle and the effect it’s having on my health.”

I would suggest that MrT is a good advert for a man of his (shall we say) many years.
The content of his beard is, and should remain his business (he did recently reveal that on very special occasions he actually trims it).
Denise ............. your thinking of the A Team ................. and our Mr T is only black when he gets home from a hard days work.

| I had the pleasure of meeting Mr T once, and he was a very very nice man, courteous and polite, he used to have a party trick that he did for drivers that thought they were hard..... he used to pick up a full Austen engine with everything on it in his arms from a bench and then place it on another bench 20 feet away, he told me it was amusing watching them trying to lift it when he was not looking...... I can remember the next day having a very very bad hangover..................... |

he sounds a real mans man !!
when you say everything was still on the engine Nick are you refering to things such as alternator, starter motor etc ?
or are you saying the whole car was still on it ???????????
dont see what it as to do with waking up with a hangover though ?
the MrT's posts i've read on other forums, have him coming across as someone who as a decent enough knowledge of the trade in his area, but my opinion is that his background and knowledge is only of hacks not ph.
his hearts in the right place even though he does get called a baron at times by some. its only a fews perspective on Mr T's views and business, just as the man in Carlisle seems to get the rough end of the stick sometimes 2

Oh yeah I did have a beard ............... in fact I still have one ................... but it cannot be compared to the one MrT has.
Felix, with regard your other statement ............. you ommitted the words "OF HIS AGE" which identify your willingness to misquote using only the words that substanciate your argument ..................... a man of 80 cannot be compared with a man of 20 with reard physique, athletisism or fitness.
Your a fool Felix ....................... what you claim I have done was done on the request of the majority of the trade ............ you see I don't tell people what they should do, I act upon what they tell me to do ...................... and together with their support we won more than we lost.
But thats why you are better than me ................... I don't believe I know whats best and have to ask the people involved ............ maybe you should try it.

With respect GA where in my post above did i claim anything about what you have done ? i merely asked ........ didnt you once or still have a beard ? and what do you have in yours?
so why are you getting on your high horse about me asking about a beard.
where did i say i know best.... ?
are you getting me mixed up with someone else or are you and Trevor on the binge together again ????
as he's Ant Hill Mob [NTA] and you now being GMB. i thought never the twain would meet, never mind mingle

Mr Felix,
I must say that membership of any organisation doesn't deflect one iota from the fact that I have great respect for anyone who lives and breaths the professional Taxi Trade ........................... and little or no respect for people who look to only take from it.
Fortunatly, or should I say unfortunatly for you, the people who I share opinions about the future of the trade with can see past those shallow enough to attempt to create division or create rifts to further their own agendas.

are you insinuating that Felix is out to create a rift within this trade or that he as an hidden agenda ?
are you not now dancing to the tune of the GMB'S own agenda, and before that did you not dance to the tune being played by the NTA ?
but to whos tune does felix dance to ?
your thoughts on a postcard to......... ............ |
