13 Nov 2007 9:25 PM Alert

AN INVESTIGATION has been launched after a taxi was in collision with a police van while it was answering a 999 call.

The incident happened shortly after 1pm on Sunday on Whalley Road, Accrington, near the junction with Eastgate.

The Ford Transit police van was responding to reports of a fight between two brothers in Bluebell Way, Huncoat, at the time of the crash.

Following the collision, the taxi crashed into nearby railings and the driver, who has not been named, had to be cut out of the vehicle by fire officers.

He was taken to the Royal Blackburn Hospital with back injuries.

Inspector Peter Zsigmod said: "The police van would have had its blue lights switched on and officers would have been allowed to use sirens.

"An investigation is being launched into the crash to determine whether the incident needs to be referred to a professional standards body or the independent Police Complaints Commission."

No-one was arrested following the reported incident in Bluebell Way after those involved said they did not want to press charges.
