Taxi ranks in parts of Nottinghamshire are to be staffed by private security guards in a bid to cut violence.
The county council is paying for the taxi marshals to be on duty in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Hucknall, Worksop and Retford over the festive period.
Officials said queues were often trouble flashpoints as people tried to get home after a night out.
The marshals will be used this weekend, the weekend before Christmas and on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.
Councillor Glynn Gilfoyle, cabinet member for community safety and partnerships, said: "The local taxi association raised the idea of taxi marshal schemes, which have been successfully trialled in other areas.
"We were happy to listen to their advice and we think that the scheme will help reduce the chances of violence at the end of a night out and will help local people enjoy a happy and safe Christmas."
