KOLKATA: A taxi driver was killed in a freak accident near gate no. 1 of Kolkata airport on Monday. The victim lost control of his car when he was driving at a very high speed and smashed into a concrete divider on Jessore Road. An iron rod that was jutting out from a roadside structure impaled him in the head. He died on the spot.

The accident happened around 7.30 am. Luckily, there was no passenger in the taxi. The cabbie is yet to be identified. His body has been sent for post-mortem.

Fatal accidents continue to occur on VIP Road but the police are yet to discipline traffic on the stretch. Accidents occur almost every day on VIP and Jessore Road due to rash driving. Lack of proper traffic management proves deadly in the high speed corridors.
