Britain’s motorists are under attack. Over 7.5 million drivers have been caught by speed cameras – some 25 per cent of all drivers. In the last three years alone, speed cameras have collected over £300 million in fines. Over one million drivers are just a single conviction away from losing their licence. There are already more than 6,000 speed cameras, and that’s set to increase with new technology posing an even greater threat.
But as Jeremy Clarkson showed this week, it is possible to fight back. The Drivers’ Club has been formed to protect drivers against loss of mobility due to minor speeding offences. The Drivers’ Club combines the benefit of professional legal representation in the event of a speed camera offence, with an insurance policy that will provide cover in the event of losing your driving licence through the totting-up process of speeding convictions. Crucially, membership is open to all drivers over the age of 18 who have held a driving licence for two years – even if you already have 11 points with a conviction pending.
Matthew Selman, membership secretary of The Drivers’ Club explained: “We do not condone dangerous driving or speeding, but millions of otherwise law abiding drivers now have points on their licences and have forked out £60 fines for inadvertently exceeding speed limits. Speed cameras have done little or nothing for road safety while the speed camera makers and the Exchequer have done very nicely. If you feel that motorists are being indiscriminately penalised, then The Drivers’ Club is for you.”
Former rally champion and TV presenter Penny Mallory, who has endorsed The Drivers’ Club, added: “Speed cameras are little more than money-making machines, but it’s not just our wallets that are under attack – many people’s livelihoods are at stake. The Drivers’ Club is one of the best innovations to help motorists I have seen in recent years and recommend that you join and protect your licence.”
Membership of The Drivers’ Club starts at just £5.95 a month and all members benefit from:
- Legal representation to defend against speed camera offences. The Club will appoint and pay for a solicitor. The Drivers’ Club would expect the member to receive no points on his or her licence and no fine.
- Insurance against loss of driving licence through the totting-up process, with cash payments.
- Lost key insurance to provide up to £1,500 worth of cover. A 24-hour helpline will arrange for a locksmith, a replacement car, a taxi and of course, replacement keys.
- Personal accident insurance with £10,000 cover.
- Big discounts in The Drivers’ Club Shop. Typically, 20 per cent off normal retail prices.
Although The Drivers’ Club’s first priority is to ensure that you keep your licence, there are four tiers of cover against loss of driving licence. Standard membership pays out an immediate £600 on the loss of a licence through totting-up. Gold membership (from £8.95 a month) provides £500 a month for up to six months. Platinum membership (from £11.95 a month) increases this to £1,000 a month for a maximum six months, and Black membership (from £14.95 a month) will pay out £1,500 a month for up to six months.
