Calls for taxi ban from store's car park

COLLEAGUES of a man killed after he was in a collision with a taxi in a Blyth supermarket car park are campaigning for taxis to be banned from the car park.

Alan Cooper, 44, from First Avenue, Blyth, died after he was struck by a car just after 11pm on Sunday, August 5.

He was in a collision with the taxi in the Morrisons car park in Wright Street and was taken to Wansbeck General Hospital where he later died.

Now colleagues of the businessman, who owned and ran Coopers Developments in Blyth, are campaigning to prevent taxis waiting in the car park with the installation of a pair of gates that would remain shut during closing hours.

Michael Butterfield, who worked at Coopers Developments with Mr Cooper, led the demonstration on Friday night at the supermarket.

"So far we have more than 600 signatures of people who want taxis banned from the car park, and we're hoping to do another night to get some more signatures before we hand it in.

"These are all people who do not want taxis to be in the car park, and we're all campaigning for gates to be put on the entrance so that when the supermarket closes there will be no access to the car park."

A Morrisons spokesperson said: "We were saddened to hear about the death of Mr Cooper.

"We have not been officially contacted by the campaigners and would welcome their approach in order that we can take their comments into consideration."
