Taxi union calls for 48-hour strike as of Wednesday
Thousands of New York City cab drivers may hold a 48-hour strike September 4 and 5 to protest the mandatory installation of credit card machines, global positioning units and video screens in all taxis, according to NY1.
The Taxi Workers Alliance, which only represents a portion of the city's cabbies, is especially unhappy with the GPS units that will track the location of the cars, as well as the credit card machines which the cab drivers must buy and pay to maintain - and drivers also lose a percentage of each transaction.
About 1,300 of the New York's 13,087 medallion taxis already have the equipment installed, according to the New York Times. The equipment will be mandatory in all city cabs by the end of January.
The credit card machines accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover and, in some cases, JCB, according to the FAQ page at the Taxi and Limousine Commission. As soon as a machine is broken, a driver must report it to the TLC and have it fixed within 48 hours.
(The Taxi Workers Alliance told amNewYork that it represents 10,000 drivers.)
