Meeting held over cabbie protest
A meeting is to be held on Tuesday in a bid to bring an end to a strike by a city's taxi drivers.
Coventry cabbies refused to work over the weekend and on Monday, saying they continually faced threats of attack.
About 200 demonstrated outside the city council's Whitley depot on Monday after drivers said the authority and police were not giving enough support.
The strike followed an attack on a driver on Friday. The meeting is being held with the licensing department.
Cuts and bruises
The attacked driver, who did not want to be identified, said he was hit by two people as he drove in Spon Street.
"They asked if I was Pakistani or Indian. I said that is irrelevant, you should not ask me that."
He was then attacked through the protective perspex in his cab but managed to flag down some help. He was left with cuts and bruises.
Geoffrie Williams, chairman of the Coventry Taxi Association, said he had had a positive meeting with police and the council.
"They have said we will all meet up every few weeks so we can discuss the problems we are facing," he said.
If a meeting with the licensing department on Tuesday goes well the strike could be called off, he added.
In a statement, the authority said: "We have been trying to arrange a meeting with the taxi association and will continue to do so.
"However, the protests at the weekend and today (Monday 20th Aug) have been sparked by a criminal incident and as such it is a police matter."
