I am just about to start as a  private hire driver,i intend to work for a local company driving their vehicles through the week but have been offered the use of another vehicle ran by a different operator (In the same council area) at weekend.

My council state that i have to give part of my license to the operator i'm working for. This seems to tie me in,does anybody know a way around this problem.................thanks

If your intending to work 7 days a week not a good idea! Health and Safety Working Time Regs. You have a smashup involving a fatality your fault or not you do 5 maybe 7 years! You have a duty of care to the public 7 days is obscene, you fall asleep someones orphaned, widowed, whatever and by the way your proprietors do porridge with you! If you cant earn aliving in 5 days the companies no good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

EDUCATE AGITATE ORGANISE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

working seven days is a nonsense, is it a short term idea with christmas coming up ?

if not then as Terry rightly said there are Health and Safety Working Time Regs. discuss it with your LO and they can give you advice.

what area are you in ? are the jobs per shift that low that you really need to do extra shifts to make it worth while.

i think you need to move onto something else my friend it'll be better for you in the long run and safer for other road users

Thanks for the advice,i don't intend working 7 days,it would just suit me better to use my friends car at the weekend and as he is with a different operator it looked awkward.

yes it is possible to work for 2 firms i did when i frist started but i did'nt hand over my licence i kept that with me (maybe because they have not ask for it yet lol)

what i did was talk to both companys and came to an arrangment with them both it was hard at frist but they both agreed to it in the end

as for your licence if they both need it at the office photocopy it frist x 2 than give each one a copy and u keep the one from your licencing officer

as for working 7days aweek i just say know your limet just work so many hrs a day that u can cope with eg; mon - friday say 9-5 for one company and the other at weekends 4/5pm until finish if on the night shift    and if you get too tried to drive anymore please stop and tell them u are not driving anymore 2day/night and have a sleep even if for a few hrs in the car ( this works for me on a friday when i work all day from 9am until 4/5am i have a sleepbreak for a few hrs or so inbeteen day and night shift if i get 2tried lateron i will say i need to stop and go home or sleep in the car) and thats ok with my boss and belive me i have done this 2 lol lots of times)

i hope this is a lot more helpful than everything esle i have just read on here for you goodluck nightowl

I'm with che guevera, he is right about health and safety, if you cant make enough money in 5 days then you need to move on the either a proper firm or a different town

The point I am trying to make is that the firm I pay my dues to have made me sign this paper or I will not get any more work from them, but I am thinking are they stopping me from making a decent living, other drivers are happy to earn the pittance, but all I am trying to do is earn a decent living

The short answer is yes you can work for two operators as long as you meet the legal requirements, However its unlikley an operator will agree to this and as its their company they will set the rules of who works on their company and who does not.
