a customer paid their fare and on leaving the cab opened their door on nearside of vehicle to step out onto the pavement. they obviously didnt check to see if the pavement was clear and hit a person of minority descent knocking them to the floor, the door as a dent the size of a fist, the passenger walked off as if nothing happened i was shocked so by the time i got out of the car and round to the pavement the passenger was off down the road as if nothing happened, i helped the poor sod up asked if they were ok. and spotted this dent the size of my fist, which was roughly the same height up the door as where their knee would of hit it.

im now being chased by a no win no fee solicitor for damages, loss of earnings and al the other crap you can imagine,

spoke to my insurance to be told i dont have legal cover, i cant find out who the fare was as it was a rank job so it looks like the shit stops with me.

as anyone else heard of anything like this and give me some advice.

much appreciated

That's bad luck urban, perhaps you had better get some legal advice yourself.

Does your house insurance have any public liability on it, or if you do school runs you should have the necessary cover.

Now I am no expert but I can’t see how the insurance company can duck out of this.

You have third party insurance and the bloke that was hit by the door is a third party right?

I mean, if you had run him over they would have to pay out.

As I said above, get some advice from a solicitor and good luck bud

Maybe in style some lessons could be learned but in substance he's right.

Loads of drivers think "it" ( whatever that means) won't happen to them so they dont bother joining anything to protect their own interests, whether it be a local association , the NTA , the GMB or even some legal protection insurance.
However when "it" happens they wont accept that their lack of foresight/ inaction has any relevance to the pickle they now find themselves in.
It's a jungle out there and it's in everyones own interest to look after themselves in the best way they see fit, which could be by joining the GMB, or not, but it doesn't mean doing nothing.

I have personally invested Hundreds of pounds in a CCTV system. I hope to never have to use its lovely recordings for real, BUT some people might view it as a waste of money if they never actually use it.
And I've also joined the GMB because even with a successful local association available ,it has neither the clout nor the expertise of a body such as the GMB.

I'm sorry this happened to you Urban Driver and I agree you should speak to a solicitor but I also think you should decide how best to provide yourself with a means to defend yourself in the future.

Good post allo-allo, for my own part I belong to my local association (Breckland Taxi & Private Hire) which is associated to the NPHA.

I also carry £10,000000 worth of public liability insurance.

Allo Allo you put it so politely, but im heartily sick of MUGS ringing me at all hours, begging for the GMB to help them despite the fact that for years they have declined to JOIN us or any other org, I wanted to annoy this guy perhaps hes learnt his lesson now? Lets get it straight to work in this industry without any back up [whatever it maybe] is the height of stupidity . I know of at least one case where a driver is likely to be imprisoned because of his DO NOTHING tactics. How loud does the warning have to be? If your too STUPID to protect yourself perhaps your family should be considerd????????????

as usual Terry GMB your being a prat, hence i asked you to keep out and not to preach but you did anyway.

OK GUYS ,NOW YOU HAVE BOTH CHUCKED YOUR TOYS OUT OF THE PRAM!! WHAT HAVE YOU ACHIEVED? FROM MY POINT OF VIEW WE NEED TO OFFER CONSTRUCTIVE ADVICE AND ASSISTANCE TO ONE ANOTHER .ALO- -ALO HAS PUT FORWARD THE VIEW THAT IN TODAYS" SUE THEM" CULTURE, THAT LEGAL PROTECTION IS A MUST HAVE.TERRY, ALSO SUPPORTS THIS VIEW AS DO I AND HUNDREDS OF BROTHERS ACROSS THE LAND.THE CAB INDUSTRY IS AWASH WITH APATHY REGARDING MOST ISSUES CONCERNING OUR TRADE BUT WE ARE NOW LOOKING AT PERSONAL CHOICE..... DO YOU PAY A WEEKLY PREMIUM OF £2.60 AND HAVE FULL LEGAL PROTECTION OR NOT,IN LONDON A SOLICITORS LETTER WILL COST UP TO £200-00 EACH TIME AND OF COURSE IT ONLY TAKES ONE LETTER DOESNT IT , £2.60 FOR PEACE OF MIND, WHAT SAY YOU

Lets get it atraight MUGS get MUGGED OFF! And probably this dope who started this off, will get mugged off! Lets hope others will learn the lesson which he hasnt as of yet!

bloody hell we've got GMB branch secretary and GMB branch president now....lol

i hope you 2 arent a double act like cannon and ball........ hopefully more morcombe and wise

i hope mr president your more tactical about the way you put things as terry just annoys people and winds them up by being offensive and slagging people off, im aware he does it for response but i think it takes away from his real intentions and puts peoples backs up.

forget slagging off other associations, as this doesnt look good on yours. by all means mention how good yours is and what good it as done but leave it to others to make up their own minds on other associations.

be topical and be informative and im sure you'll get good response back

Regards

Dave H

TERRY DID IT ESCAPE YOUR ATTENTION THAT CONGRESS AGREED A 0.10PENCE INCREASE IN SUBS, SO £2.50    BECOMES £2.60 STILL TRUST A GOONER TO FORGET THE SCORE!!!! IT WOULD SEEM THAT WE ARE UNITED- UNITED IN ALL OTHER MATTERS CHAMPIONS, EH ;LAD
