Harold , theres probably more than 300,000 involved in the industry nationwide, including office staff.
Your question is it any good ME joining, is the wrong one, the real question is will the industry be a better for the workers in it if it were organised? Obviously yes, Unionised industries are safer, fairer, and more successfull than non organised. In transport amd particularly in London, Unions are highly successfull where the workers are prepared to FIGHT for their rights; ie. Bob Crow and the RMT, currently tube drivers are on £38000, for a thirty five hr week, and 9 weeks holiday entitlement, which clearly demonstrates the value of organisation! I suggest you look at our site gmbprofessionaldriversbranch.co.uk for more info, the GMB has 600,000 members nationwide, and the london region 80,000, however London is divided in half on our regional boundaries, we have 60,000 members in Southern Region which includes South London.
In effect most of our members dont pay contributions for the fringe benefits invariably cover the membership fees.
DECISIONS ARE TAKEN BY THOSE THAT JOIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Steptoe who are you? note your still hiding behind an alias! WHY?
Would you be better off joining your local Association? even the best of them are now recognising the necessity of not being parochial!
We have no figures for Taxi trade only, our membership includes Chauffeurs,PHV,Couriers,Hack and office staff associated with these industries.
Dont understand your comment your not interested in RETAIL?????????????????????
UNITED YOU STAND DIVIDED YOU FALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
