Taxi driver killed in knife attack

A murder probe has been launched after a knife attack on a taxi driver.

The 31-year-old man is believed to have been chasing a passenger who did not pay a fare when he was fatally stabbed. The attack happened in a cul-de-sac at Fortlawn Avenue, Blanchardstown, west Dublin, shortly after 10pm on Tuesday.

A garda spokesman urged anyone with information to contact officers at Blanchardstown. "We are looking into all the circumstances surrounding the incident at the moment," he said.

Makes me ask myself 'would I chase someone down for not paying a fare?' I'm not sure I would.

A man has appeared in court charged with the murder 31-year-old taxi driver Mark Smyth in Blanchardstown on Tuesday.

Carlos Byrne, 22, with an address at Linnitsfield Square, Clonee, appeared at a sitting of Dublin District Court this morning.

Michael Kennedy of Blanchardstown Garda Station gave evidence of arresting Mr Bryne at 11.10pm last night at Blanchardstown Garda Station.  Sgt Kennedy told the court that when the charge was put to him, Mr Byrne said 'I'm sorry'.

Judge Lindsay remanded the accused in custody. Mr Byrne is to appear at Cloverhill District Court next Thursday.

The 31-year-old Mr Smyth, from Duleek in Co Meath, died after being stabbed with a knife.

Mr Smyth was stabbed a number of times after a row broke out in his car.

A 25-year-old woman, arrested yesterday as part of the investigation, has been released.

A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

I have, and although I didn't get the fare off them they "payed"

If they get away with it once then they will think they can do it again and again.

Get some surveillance.  Fit a secure effective camera in your cab and get clear pictures of the low life.
